Music

What is it about music that is so dang amazing? I mean, obviously we enjoy music because God Himself enjoys music, namely through the praises of His creation. I just can't comprehend its power. I've always wondered why it has been such a stumbling block to me, music that is. Whenever I get extremely depressed about something, I listen to a CD that has deep wailing pitifying vocals that make me cry crocodile tears. Or even music that sounds upbeat yet at the same time describing horrible events that drag me down into pits of melancholy. I listen to music that makes me want to jump out of a window, resurrect, and jump out again. And I absolutely love it! I even listen to sad music when I have nothing to be sad about, especially while I drive, and as I listen to it I sing it as loud as I can holding back the tears as best I can, just driving and singing and crying. Those times have been some of the best times of my life. These words fail at capturing the soulful death and life seeping forth from the radio speakers. As much as I love crazy-hard scream your lungs out breakdown chugga chugga bassy head splitting music, I could never replace the bands that I listen to, the bands that breathe out arms to comfort my trembling and shaking body as they reassuredly hold me, connotating feelings of "I know man, I know...". As much as I love Evans/Coltrane/Jarrett/Mingus jazz and melodic majestic symphony's and Mendelssohn Piano Concerto's and Bach's sweet beautiful Cello Suite's and soaring church choral masses, I could never trade in the songs that make me cry, make me weep in sadness. The songs that make me mourn never-had-lovers, dream about beautiful girls that told me to fuck off, and better times lost in the past, these songs are an energy source for me, a source that keeps me moving forward all the while driving me into Sheol with it. Why can't I seem to find the same comfort and joy from the Word of God? It is rife with comfort in sadness, comfort in happiness, comfort in God. Blessed is Nathan who mourns, for he will be comforted. The Bible invented comfort for the mourners, yet I don't go to it. Well, there is always something to overcome and I'll have no problem with this one. I'll go to the Doc for some Prozac as soon as I can...just kidding...

Thank You For Smoking

Thank You For Smoking is probably the most clever movie ever. This much sarcasm should be illegal. It has so many great parts and it is impossible to just remember one. A few lines I took away from the movie include Nick Naylor's discussion with the movie producer Jeff Megal about the need to put more cigarette smoking in movies.

Nick Naylor: Now what we need is a smoking role model. A real winner.
Jeff Megal: Indiana Jones meets Jerry Maguire
Nick Naylor: Right, on two packs a day.

...and also a bit before this discussion...

Jeff Megal: Sony has a futuristic sci-fi movie they're looking to make.
Nick Naylor: Cigarettes in space?
Jeff Megal: It's the final frontier, Nick.
Nick Naylor: But wouldn't they blow up in an all oxygen environment?
Jeff Megal: Probably. But it's an easy fix. One line of dialogue. "Thank god we invented the... you know, whatever device."

I found these quotes on IMDB's website. This only goes to show that it is impossbile to remember everything good in the movie, because there was so much. I do think the main characters name being Nick is because of "Nicotine". I figured that bit out by myself. Robert Duvall is great, and the fact that he is a smoking Christian makes me all giddy inside. And William Macy is good in everything, also Sam Elliot. I kept waiting for Sam Elliot to say, "Any of you sons of bitches calls me grampa, I'll kill ya." Or, "how do you know what kind of a goddamn day it is?" Oh yeah and then there was that loud guy from spiderman in the movie too, the guy who is super obnoxious, and super funny. Ha! dude, great movie...great movie

All Quiet on the Western Front

Today was my final day of house-sitting, and I decided to celebrate...
I went to Einstein Bros. bagel shop and sat outside. The weather was a kind of warm cold humid, making it ideal to sit outside. I picked up a book at the Borders Express last night, Anthony Bourdain: A Cook's Tour, which is delightfully smart and harsh. I sat outside and read while I smoked the author's select choice of cigarette. I read and occasionally listened to my fellow diners conversations, all in Spanish (of course). Einstein's offers a delectable flavor of coffee called Choco Java. It is very bold, with strong undernotes of dark rich chocolate, and very wonderful. A little milk made this experience amazing. The first chapter in the book described Bourdain's journey to Portugal where he witnessed the slaughter of a pig, and then his enjoyment of the massive meal that followed. His descriptions drip flavor and witty sarcasm, and I love both. I can't get enough of the guy. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys laughing and imagining exotic places with food to die for. You should also catch his show on the Travel Channel.
Everyone have a marvellous weekend...

My eyes burn red tonight

My principle left for Ireland on Wednesday the twelfth. With him went his two sons and his wife. They own a house, a dog named Gunner, three fish tanks, and a cat. Gunner is one fat mother, the biggest Yellow Lab I have ever seen. Because my principle left for Ireland, his house needed a sitter, someone to come and feed his large yellow dog, his fish in three tanks, and cat. Wednesday night I started house-sitting. At 6:30 in the morning I woke up to let the dog out of his in-house kennel so that he wouldn't shit in it. After he went outside I proceeded to make his breakfast.

2 large cups Eukanuba Dry Dog Food
3 heaping tbs Purina Beef and Liver Wet Dog Food
1 large cup carrots

(He eats this in 4 seconds, no joke) Then I fed all the fish, and there are many. The cat is Satan's own and I have shot it numerous times with the air soft rifle laying in the house, but I fed it anyways.
At 7:30 my friend picked me up and we headed over to Starbucks for our morning cup of coffee and Marlboro 27. This is one of the highlights of my day.
School let at 3:00 and my friend and I headed over to Starbucks again for our daily Venti ice-water, and Marlboro Red.
Once I finished my janitorial duties I headed back over to my adopted house to feed the animals. The same food is given to the same animals. At around 10:00 I let Gunner in his kennel located in the kitchen. For his bedtime snack he gets two pig ears.
I went to bed after watching Deadliest Catch, Dirty Jobs, and The Real World.
